My Story

I grew up in Angus, Scotland, and after university made my way to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and television.

Over the years, I’ve done nearly every job in the business - from production runner to assistant, from being an executive at  a film financier, Phoenix Pictures, to founding Underground Films, a management and production company, with Trevor Engelson. Yet deep down I always had a nagging desire to write.

So fourteen years ago I sold my half of the business - setting out to become both a novelist and a television writer. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to develop projects with Netflix, Apple, CBS, FX, and more. It hasn’t always been easy. There have been times of doubt but I’ve kept on writing because there is nothing I love to do more than come up with stories and characters, the latter very often becoming the dearest of friends.

Almost magically, I have come full circle and returned to Scotland to make An T-Eilean (The Island) for BBC Alba and Black Camel.

Along the way, I am proud to have founded The Verbum Dei High School Entertainment Club in Watts, California with Trevor, and to have been a reserve officer in the Los Angeles Police Department. Most of all I have been blessed to have a wife and two children whom I love and adore.

Life’s not easy but I don’t think it’s meant to be. Where else would the stories come from? And it’s my hope and dream that I can continue to write as long as I have stories to tell.
